Can I access my risk assessment prior to my counseling session?
- Alzheimer’s Mirror handles genetic risk disclosure in a socially responsible manner. We believe this occurs most effectively through disclosure by a licensed genetic counselor. Because of this, you will only have full access to you results after your initial meeting with a counselor and not prior to doing so. If you cannot meet with your genetic counselor on your scheduled date, you will need to reschedule your session before you will be able to view any of your risk assessment results. For information on rescheduling your session, please log in to your account and go to the “Schedule Appointment” section.
- After you meet with your counselor, you will have full access to the results of your APOE genetic test. You will be able to print copies of your results for yourself, your family and your healthcare provider, if you choose to.
Do I need internet access for my session?
- It is not necessary to have an internet connection during your appointment. After your appointment, you will be able to view your entire results report online in your My Account section.
Should I make any preparations for my session?
- Prior to your genetic counseling appointment, we provide you with materials to review to help you prepare for your appointment. This includes commonly asked questions, and suggestions on how to physically and mentally prepare. We encourage you to be prepared with any questions you may have for your genetic counselor so that you can get the most out of your genetic risk disclosure. You can go to your My Account section to download the materials to prepare for your counseling appointment.
Does it cost extra for additional counseling sessions?
- Alzheimer’s Mirror believes it is important for genetic risk disclosure to be handled in a socially responsible manner. Because of this, we want each individual who purchases our test to meet with one of our licensed genetic counselors over the phone. The initial half hour disclosure session is free. You will also be given the opportunity for another 15 minute session with a counselor a few weeks after you receive your results. This session will enable you to ask any additional questions you may have.
- Additional counseling is available for you to purchase, in increments of 30 minutes for $75. To take advantage of these sessions, log in to your account, where you will then be able to schedule additional sessions.
Scheduling My Genetic Counseling Session
How and when do I schedule my session?
- Once our lab receives your sample, we will send you an email notifying it has been received, and instruct you on how to schedule your genetic counseling appointment.
How long will my session last?
- Your original genetic risk disclosure will last up to a half an hour. Additional counseling sessions are available for purchase after your initial disclosure.
Rescheduling Genetic Counseling Sessions
What if I forget about my session?
- We understand that your schedule can be hectic. That is why we send you a reminder email 2 days before your scheduled session with one of our genetic counselors. The email will tell you
- The date and time of your scheduled session
- What you should expect from your session
- Things you can do to best prepare for your risk assessment disclosure
We allocate a half hour for you to discuss your results with a licensed genetic counselor. We ask that you check your calendar once you receive the reminder email.
